The HOPE Method Blog: A Beauty Series Specifically for Women in Treatment for Cancer

Oncology Aesthetics

Introduction Post

Hello! I am Jeanna Doyle Ruhl, a licensed cosmetologist with training as a medical aesthetic provider, corrective makeup artist, and oncology esthetician. I wrote the first beauty book on wig selection, WigED, and I have more than 30 years of experience in the aesthetic industry working with oncologists and plastic and reconstructive surgeons at some of the most renowned hospitals and cancer centers in the world.

Why did I start this blog? Far too often, women are told, “Don’t focus on how you look during treatment.” While this advice may be well intentioned, it fails to take into account the importance of our feelings about how we look. Caring about our appearances isn’t vanity; it’s part of our identity. Our appearances can change significantly during treatment, and when we suddenly lose hair, we simultaneously lose our privacy. Who wouldn’t want some control over that?

I created this blog for women to offer the tools needed to feel good about seeing friends or resuming work with privacy and confidence without the need to explain appearance to anyone. If you are staying home, I want it to be because you want to or just need the rest and not because you don’t feel confident going out.

At a time when many things may seem out of your immediate control, your appearance is one area where you can exercise some control. It’s not either/or; it’s both. I believe you are capable of getting well and feeling good about how you look in the process.

Consider me your beauty champion! That’s right! I am here for you, from diagnosis through treatment to a new life after cancer.

In this blog, I will cover topics based on the questions I receive the most, from wigs to skincare to corrective makeup to style tips. Each topic has been customized to fit your needs. I will also have some fancy friends join me to share their expertise with you on all things beauty.
