WigED: A series for women facing hair loss, focusing on first-time wig wearers.

wig selection

Introduction Post

Hello, I’m Jeanna Doyle Ruhl, a licensed cosmetologist with specialized training as a medical aesthetic provider, corrective makeup artist, and oncology esthetician. In this introductory blog, I’d like to share a bit about myself, my book, and this blog.

For my entire career, I’ve been in the beauty industry. Working in luxury spas and collaborating with plastic and reconstructive surgeons, my specific expertise lies in wig selection and corrective makeup. Specifically, I use makeup to restore balance to one’s appearance post-surgery, injury, or illness. My professional journey spans both media and medical settings. In the media realm, I’ve traveled the United States and glamorous destinations worldwide, contributing to print, television, and film projects with A-List actors, elite athletes, models, musicians, and even a former President and First Lady of the United States.

Within medical settings, I’ve worked in private practices, hospitals, cancer centers, and children’s hospitals. My makeup work has been featured in two scientific studies—one in plastic surgery and another in oncology aesthetics.

In 2012, a close friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer, prompting me to assist her in selecting her first wig. She told me that if I hadn’t helped, she would have felt really overwhelmed, and that has stuck with me. Despite my familiarity with wigs for creative purposes, the selection process was not as obvious to her or many women facing similar circumstances. Surprising, even as a hairdresser, I hadn’t received any education on wig selection. There is a significant lack of resources in the area. This gap in knowledge exists despite the wig industry being a billion-dollar business in the US and Canada alone.

Motivated by this need for support in the face of hair loss, I decided to write “WigED” and create this blog. Both endeavors aim to demystify the process of wig shopping. It’s important to note that my intention is not to persuade anyone to buy or wear a wig. Instead, I’ve crafted this content to empower you to make an informed choice, whether it involves a wig or not. My sincere hope is that I can guide you to a decision that brings you peace.
